Ricky Gervais tells Ellen he hates humanity, avoids meet and greets but loves dogs
Whenever I see a new video featuring British comedian, writer, director, producer Ricky Gervais, I click on it. After all, he is the funniest man on the planet. Even when he’s talking about the most terrible things.
So Ricky Gervais’ latest appearance on The Ellen Show this week was click bait of the highest order for me.
And this time it was Gervais talking about his stand-up tour ‘Humanity‘, and how he really doesn’t like people (honestly, who does?), “I prefer dogs” he said, and about how there is never a Meet and Greet after his shows because of it.
On the stand-up tour:
“It’s my favorite thing now. I hadn’t done it for seven years. I kept putting it back, because I always thought stand-up was the second or third job I did. I thought I was a writer/director or actor, whatever, but now this tour…I’ve been on tour for a year nearly, and I love it more than anything. I just want to do it forever now. I don’t know why. I think it took me this long to get good at it. You know 15 years”.
On why the tour is called ‘Humanity’
Ellen then asked him why the tour was called “Humanity“.
“I just thought it was time to let the world know what an awful species we are”,
which made me laugh as all there was from the American audience was a gentle titter. (Come on, folks, he may be joking but he’s serious. We are an awful species — far worse than any animal on the planet, as I’m sure Gervais himself absolutely believes in all seriousness).
“We’re the worst. All human beings,” he went on. “I love animals. Human beings? Could take ’em or leave ’em.”
“They’re the ones coming to see you. You know that, right?” Ellen laughingly asked him.
“I tell ’em at the beginning of the show. I don’t know why I called it ‘Humanity‘, I’m not a big fan. I prefer dogs. Dogs are brilliant”.
Why Ricky Gervais does not do Meet and Greets
“When you do tours like that, you have to do a Meet and Greet afterwards, so..”
“Oh no, no, no, no”, interrupted Gervais. “I’m in the car before they’ve finished clapping. I play venues where the car can get by the stage. I’m in my hotel room before they’re out of the venue.”
Watch Ricky Gervais on why he doesn’t like people in the Ellen video below, and laugh as much as I did.
