Watch Charlotte Gainsbourg make Kanye West’s ‘Runaway‘ sound soft, sad and beautiful

British-French singer songwriter Charlotte Gainsbourg appeared on the French music show Taratata last week where she sat down at the piano and played a gorgeous cover of Kanye’s West’s song ‘Runaway‘.

A cover in which Gainsbourg sang the song softly, and made even the lyrics “Let’s have a toast for the douchebags / Let’s have a toast for the a*sholes / Let’s have a toast for the scumbags” sound beautiful.

Charlotte Gainsbourg was on Taratata to promote her new album Rest released in November last year. Her first album since her 2011 release Stage Whisper, and an album that has been critically acclaimed. It even made it onto several critics’ Best Albums of 2017 lists.

Watch Gainsbourg’s soft and lovely performance of ‘Runaway’ in the video below and then compare it to the original Kanye West rap version below that, and you will see Gainsbourg’s version has a more tragic feel.
