Former One Direction member Zayn Malik recently gave his first solo interview that will air on Zane Lowe’s Apple Beats 1 show this week. In it, Malik is completely honest about his feelings on the band, at one point saying he never wanted to be a One Direction band member.
“I think I kinda always wanted to go, like from the first year really,” the 23-year-old singer says. I never really wanted to be in the band. I just gave it a go because it was there at the time. And then when I realized the direction we were going in (mind the pun) with the music, I instantly realized it wasn’t for me.”
Because, yes, it seems it was more the type of music One Direction was playing than anything else that really bothered Zayn.
“I realized I couldn’t put any input in. I couldn’t give my opinion on this or that because it didn’t fit the grain of what we were as a band, and what we represented. That’s when it became frustrating for me.”

Zayn Malik’s first solo album, Mind of Mine, is due to be released on March 25th. It features 18 new tracks that Zayn says are more of an R&B sound than the pop music One Direction is known for. 18 tracks out of 46 Malik originally wrote for possible inclusion on the album.
You’ll find the full track list in Zayn’s tweet below. You can pre-order his upcoming new album below that. It comes as a standard or deluxe version and as a clean or explit release.
